  • In an attractive harbour village two minutes' walk from the beach
  • Two miles from the market town of Bridport
  • Pool, paddling pool, adventure playground, climbing wall, bar and café
Dorset apple cake with clotted cream, spankingly fresh seafood, organic cheeses, sumptuous ice cream, lipsmacking local ales – no wonder so many people flock to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s old stamping ground. The first River Cottage TV shows were filmed at his smallholding near West Bay Holiday Park, where guests are perfectly placed to make the most of the farmers’ markets, restaurants and brewery tours in the pretty neighbouring town of Bridport on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. Don’t forget your bucket and spade: you can walk straight through the gates of the holiday park into West Bay’s scenic harbour and onto the stunning beach which goes on for miles. There’s no shortage of things to do on site either: wallowing about in the indoor pool, which has a separate toddlers’ pool with a slide, as well as a full-sized flume; there's also bike hire, nature trails, eclectic activities for preschoolers to teens in the well-organised kids’ clubs, a great adventure playground with a climbing wall, amusements, and free evening entertainment for the whole family in the Riverside Club. There are good basic amenities on site (including a launderette, shop and off licence, and a cash machine) as well as a bar and café with harbour views if you tire of the washing up.

Star fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The staff were all truly friendly and helpful. The fully serviced pitch was perfect, nice size and private with a hedge either side. The position of the site is great for looking around the harbour and a pleasant walk into Bridport.

Disliked: The ladies showers and toilets were clean but cold. The doors were never fully closed.

Star fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Friendly helpful staff. Location Lively site Peace, but was out of season..... Very hot showers. Very personal care.

Disliked: Lack of heat in toilet block /shower room. Wind tunnel and doors kept open. Nothing but imagine different atmosphere when full in school holidays.

Liked: Very close to beach and amenities, staff very helpful.

Disliked: Couldn’t get screw in pegs in gravel pitch, seemed like concrete just below the surface. Had to take our awning down when it was windy. The WiFi couldn’t be found in caravan park.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Location - excellent - easy walk to local attractions. Pitch size - good toilet access etc Family entertainment was brill as was the pool. Rusty round the edges but kids don't care.

Disliked: Shower block could have been warmer considering the weather outside.. so only braved it once. Would put me off staying a full week in the cooler months. Booked grass but was 'upgraded' to hardstanding. Not an upgrade as a single parent trying to pitch alone, I understand the grass was waterlogged - but a heads up would have been nice so I'd been more prepared on arrival. Although they did try.

Star fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: Location and facilities. The amount of space on the pitch was great and the fact that it was all pebbles was good so no kid was traipsed into the caravan

Disliked: The cleanliness of the washing machines ( inside the draws) Not having continuous running water in the showers.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Staff were very attentive upon arrival. The pitch was a great size, and facilities great with plenty of toilets, showers and hairdryer in the ladies. Clean and tidy.

Disliked: Unfortunately we forgot to bring an electric hookup, this could possibly something they could sell in the shop or rent out. The weather turned bad so we only stayed one night out of 2 but would return possibly in a glancing pod instead!

Star fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked: The touring area of the holiday park was lovely. They were fairly decent in size. We were on a FS pitch and they had some hedges for privacy. The shower block and toilets were always clean and the water was nice and hot.

Disliked: The "milkshake" activities available for little ones were absolutely rubbish. The woman hosting kept yawning throughout, had no idea about the characters and no enthusiasm or passion. The pool was filthy. The water was cloudy and there were bits of goodness knows what floating in the pool. The changing room had actual poo on the floors and these weren't checked or cleaned in between sessions. We paid for a Paw Patrol session and again, the woman hosting was awful. She spent so long trying to divide 14 children into two groups and could not organise the most basic of activities. The whole area, including activities and entertainment were so poor. The only good thing was the touring fields! We won't be returning, and if your main motivation for booking is a site activities for children, definitely avoid.

Local attractions

Start on the doorstep in West Bay itself: you could go fossil hunting underneath the sandstone cliffs, crabbing in the harbour, take a boat tour of the Jurassic Coast, or head out into the big blue yonder on a sea fishing trip; then there’s golf, paragliding, scuba diving, watersports, and excellent walking along the coastal paths… Take a break from feeding yourself up on all the gorgeous local produce to hand feed the birds at Abbotsbury Swannery, where the 600 nesting mute swans make for an impressive sight (and plenty of hungry beaks); there are also award-winning gardens and a kids' farm to explore. The coastal resort of Lyme Regis has been drawing the crowds since time immemorial and is well worth a visit; other historical gems in West Dorset include the Jacobean manor house of Mapperton, set amongst topiary, terraced gardens and rolling hills; Forde Abbey and gardens; a cluster of castles; and the giant chalk man in the hillside at Cerne Abbas. Alternatively, if there are animal addicts in your party, they'll go ape for the 240-plus inhabitants of Monkey World and potty for the penguins and underwater specimens at Weymouth Sea Life Park.
