Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre is a scenic Powys site in the northern part of the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park National Park (aka the Brecon Beacons), 10 minutes’ drive from Brecon and with direct access to the A470 for easy travels. The views from this quiet rural site (part of a traditional 19th-century Welsh farmhouse called Argoed Lwyd) are pretty special: to the east are the peaks of Pen y Fan and Corn Ddu, and to the south the nature reserve of Craig Cerrig Gleisiad and the summit of Fan Frynych mountain. There’s plenty of outdoor seating provided outside the farmhouse so it’s easy to find a spot in which to settle to take it all in. But it’s not all about the scenery seen from the site itself: this is also a handy location for getting out and about for days of walking, mountain biking or road cycling (all of which can be done directly from the site) or for travelling a little further afield for the multitude of other activities within the park. If you need a hand to sort any of these, the experienced instructors at the centre offer activities including canoeing, gorge walking and guided hill walks or waterfall walks. Accommodation on site is in two self-contained spaces, each of which has several bedrooms (with bunk beds), a comfy lounge area, a dining space and bathrooms. Each also has a spacious and well-equipped kitchen along with an outdoor patio area that’s fab for outdoor meals or morning cups of tea. Supplies for all this can be picked up in Brecon – or you might like to treat yourselves to a meal out at the pub 15 minutes’ walk away.

Longbarn 3 bedroom bunkhouse

Liked: Argoed Lwyd has been a real retreat. We were greeted by ravens and red kites flying above the fields surrounding the Longbarn. The day bought hundreds of butterflies to the garden and in the evening bats could be seen and heard. The simplicity of the accommodation suited us. It is clean, well maintained and everything worked. The staff we contacted and met were helpful and very happy to give information about the local area. The view of Pen y fan from the barn is worth the cost alone. We would love to return again one day.

Disliked: Having to go home.

Local attractions

When you’re done with the trails that take off directly from the site and you fancy travelling a little further afield for a hike, Pen y Fan mountain (20 minutes’ drive) will be one for the books. If you’re not quite up to one of Wales’ bigger mountains just yet, the Four Falls Walk (25 minutes) has a loop around four waterfalls or Bike Park Wales (half an hour) will get you on a pair of wheels instead. For things just for the kids (and big kids, of course), the Play Barn at Brynich (10 minutes) has some splendid soft play for a tumble or Cantref Adventure Farm (20 minutes) has everything from tobogganing to pig races and horse riding. Bag a new book from the bookshops in Hay-on-Wye (half an hour), take a masterclass or tour around the Penderyn whisky distillery (25 minutes) or rock up for some watersports at Llangorse Lake (20 minutes). There’s a whole host of things to do and caverns and a dinosaur park could make the cut too, as the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (25 minutes) are close by too.
