Hunting for a peaceful and secluded Somerset spot with a backdrop fit for a postcard? Stay at Wimbleball Holidays, 20 minutes' drive from Dulverton, and you can wake up to sublime views of Wimbleball Lake, a mere 50 metres away. The location is spot on if you fancy trying your hand at a range of watersports, including kayaking, canoeing, rowing, sailing and windsurfing. Walking, cycling, birdwatching and fishing are also popular picks if you’d rather appreciate the lake views while sticking to dry land. More? A 10-minute stroll along the shore of the lake will take you to the impressive Wimbleball Dam. This peaceful park is within Exmoor National Park, so think moorland, woodland and wildlife… and plenty of ways to explore it all. The area's also famed for its stargazing (it was Europe's first Dark Sky Reserve, no less), so come prepped to stay up late and turn sights skywards on a clear night. The site is on a working family farm and at certain times of year visitors are welcome to get involved with the running of it, with shearing to be done and lambs to be fed (go on – you know you want to have a go…). There are a couple of village pubs around two miles from the site but if you can’t tear yourself away from the views, barbecues and campfires are permitted on site. As for facilities, a washing-up area, toilets and showers are available on site.

Tyckte om: Small and quiet site with great facilities for a long weekend stay, including excellent hot showers. The site is sheltered with level pitches and only a two minute walk to Wimbkeball Lake and the circular route around the lake. The owners have put thought into the small set-up, the camping facilities (e.g.fridges, freezers and an under-cover drying line) and into the suggestions for places to visit in the area.

Tyckte om: Lovely site tucked away at the bottom of a lane with just a short walk to the lake. Very friendly and helpful hosts who brought out bubbles to keep the kids occupied- thank you! Spotlessly clean facilities with the bonus of having a fridge and kettle. Nice and quiet, well maintained site. We'll definitely be back.

Tyckte inte om: No WiFi signal, which would be a negative for some but great for us to fully switch off. So no negatives!

Tyckte om: Great location to escape busy city life. Beautiful lake with lots of activities such as fishing, kayaking, cycling and walking. Children enjoyed farm animals and wild life around. Hosts are great!!!! Brian did bubbles for our children. Facilities are clean. We had great time!!!

Tyckte om: Quiet, secluded spot. Good ground for hammering pegs in! Very helpful hosts. Lovely warm showers. Lots of fridge and freezer space. Beautiful walks on your doorstep. No phone signal.

Tyckte inte om: Not being able to put car by the tent - was fine in the end and I understand why. No phone signal - both a like and dislike! Shared M/F toilets and only 2 sinks was a bit of a pain in the morning when you want to wash your hands and there's a queue of people brushing teeth and hair.

Tyckte om: The owners couldn't do enough for us, they were so helpful, checking in every day to see if there was anything we needed. Lovely small site right next to the lake. Handy amenities such as fridges, a kettle and plug sockets available.

Tyckte om: Really peaceful. Very remote, beautiful area. We got up at 2am one night to watch the stars and there is so little light pollution you could see satellites and shooting stars. Brian, owner, was lovely, hired a little fire pit and bought some logs which made the evening. Our little Jack Russell had a great time as well

Tyckte inte om: Nothing to do with the site but there aren’t that many places to eat out in the evening in the local area

Tyckte om: Lovely peaceful place with excellent scenery The toilet,showers and washing up facilities were absolutely spotless cleaned twice a day The owner was a lovely character and nothing was too much bother I would highly recommend this campsite if you love watersports and walking No internet connection was no annoying phones to disturb the peace and quiet Downside is very on the beaten track no local shop or pub within walking distance but dont let this put you off as the peace and tranquility makes up for. We will definitely return as it's a hidden gem 10/10

There is a similarly named site next door; look for a sign saying ‘Wimbleball Holidays/South Greenslade Farm’. The postcode (TA22 9NU) takes you to a house 500 metres from the farm. When the satnav tells you that 'you have reached your destination', keep on going to the end of the road (bear left at the fork) and it’s the first house on the right with an arch over the gate.

Lokala sevärdheter

There's direct access to Wimbleball Lake and its surrounding cycle path from the site, so you don’t have to go far for things to do… just up and go. The lake’s activity centre is less than a mile away; here you can get to grips with a host of activities on water and land, and there’s a high ropes course to tackle too. Swap the lake for the seafront if you’d rather, as Somerset’s beaches – including Minehead – are around half an hour's drive away. If you’re heading to Minehead and feel like seeking out a bit of history, Dunster village is about five minutes from there, for a wander around Dunster Castle, Conygar Tower and a working watermill. For family-friendly adventures, it’s all aboard the West Somerset Railway for a ride on a steam train (10 minutes away by car) or off to meet the ponies at Exmoor Pony Centre (half an hour). 40 minutes in the car will take you to the county town of Taunton for an array of high street and independent shops to keep shopaholics busy – historic Bath Place is a good spot to start with if you're partial to picking up bits in independent shops.
